Fun Christmas Plate Sets now available at Steinmart!

Horray for having friends and family around the country to send out on reconnaissance missions!  My latest appetizer plate collection by Certified International is now available in Steinmart stores – and we have no Steinmart stores in Portland.

Thankfully they have some in Reno near my mom so I sent her out, armed with a picture of what she was looking for.  Not only did she find them but she made sure they were prominently displayed on the shelf and took lots of pictures for me to see and share! (Thanks Mom!)

If you are looking for fun holiday dishes or a great hostess gift – these sets of four 8″ round plates come in a great box – ready for your holiday giving!

Get ready – the holidays are right around the corner!

Get personalized stationery from Orange Daisy Paper Press featuring the art of Tara Reed Designs

I’ve been a sucker for fun stationery for as long as I can remember… Maybe “sucker” isn’t the right word to use because it makes it seems like I’m being duped into something that is bad for me.  Perhaps I should say “I’ve had a weak spot” for pretty paper products from a very young age.

I remember pouring over Current Catalogs, admiring beautiful boxed cards in stores and loving to find just the right post-it note to fit the occasion.

Now I am over-the-moon excited to have hundreds of my designs available through a new online store – Orange Daisy Paper Press.

Here is what they have to say about themselves:

At Orange Daisy Paper Press, we want you to Send Your Style!  We hope you’ll find your style here whether it’s an invitation, stationery, thank you note, or even a cupcake pick.   Orange Daisy Paper Press is an online custom stationery and card company featuring superior quality and unique designs.  It is our goal to revive the art of written correspondence and the importance of a proper thank you, all while sending along a little style.

Each order is custom-made based on customer selections, and assembled by hand to ensure the highest attention to detail.  We only ship a finished product that we would be proud to send to our own friends and family.  We use what we believe to be superior materials individually selected to match the uniqueness of each product.  We use both professional high-resolution laser printing equipment as well as professional die-cutting equipment.

Orange Daisy Paper Press has also launched a Facebook Page and they are looking for people who like their products to “like” the page.  Once they hit 100 likes they will chose 5 people at random to win 10 free Thank You Notes.  So head over, click the “like” button and maybe you’ll be one of the lucky winners! https://www.facebook.com/orangedaisypaperpress

If you are one of the few women on this planet that doesn’t have body image issues, don’t read this…

For the rest of you – I have a little something to tell you about.

I’m stepping outside of my comfort to admit some things I usually reserve for private conversations with only the closest of friends.  I have had body image issues and fluctuating weight gain and loss since high school.  I know I’m not alone but this isn’t something I usually share publicly.

Growing up I was the super skinny girl – my great aunt used to tell me I was shaped “like a bed slat” – thanks Aunt Mary!  That makes a teen feel good!  Then I went to France my junior year and the emotional eating kicked into gear – I gained about 35 lbs in 3 months and cried the day my dad thought he was clever starting a letter with “Dear Chubby…”  It all came off when I came home but my belief that I could eat whatever I wanted was gone.

Since then I’ve been like many, many others – gain weight, try a diet, lose weight, gain it back… Avoid cameras, try to position myself in the back of group shots, avoid mirrors… any of this sound familiar?  Things could be going well then something happens and I turn to food for comfort.  I search and search for love in the bag of Raisinets… only to feel great while eating and then terrible about myself when I’m done.

I could go on and on but you get the idea… let’s move on to what I want to tell you about.

I met this woman named Laura Fenamore about 3 years ago at a weekend retreat for a business class I had taken.  It had nothing to do with weight loss – we were just both students and meeting lots of other interesting people.  She seemed nice, had a great weekend, went on my merry way.  Same thing happened the next year.  I talked to her again because she is just so nice – one of those people that just has kind and friendly energy.

One day on Twitter she posted a blog about art and weight… being an artist, it caught my eye.  I innocently tweeted back, “I need to be kinder to myself.”  (SO TRUE!  You probably need to be kinder to yourself too – try it, it will feel weird at first but you might like it!)  I started to look into exactly what it was that Laura did…

I knew her basic story – she had been overweight as a teen and young adult, lost 100 lbs and kept it off.  (WOW!)  She’s been on many radio and tv shows, featured in magazines and more.

I started looking at her OnePinky programs and thinking… maybe it isn’t just about the food.  Since I’ve repeated the lovely cycle of dieting, success, and going back to my old ways, maybe I should try something new.

I’ve been working with Laura for a few months and I can tell you – it is not for the faint of heart.  :)   She asks you to look at the tough stuff – like what you love about yourself and what unkind things you tell yourself on a daily basis – not just “eat more broccoli! Rah! Rah! Rah!”  In fact, I don’t think we even talked about food for the first 2 months.  Because it really isn’t about the food…  if you have a weight issue – a big or little one – it probably is more about why you eat what you do and why you eat when you eat.

Figure that out and you can be friends with food – what a concept!

The reason I am telling you my deep, dark, emotional eating secrets isn’t just to make myself uncomfortable and incredibly vulnerable (which is precisely how I feel!) but because I want you to know where I’m coming from.  I became an affiliate of Laura’s OnePinky programs because they have and are helping me and they just might help you too!

Here’s the deal – there is a new, 12 week group program starting October 4th.

You can live anywhere because it’s all done by phone.  If you are willing to take a serious look at your beliefs, shed some tears and know that you will come out the other side feeling better about yourself and in turn your body, I encourage you to check it out.  Go to www.OnePinky.com/BodyImageMastery/* for more details.

Now… back to your regularly scheduled day.  Wishing you health, happiness and a sense of peace with your body!

Vintage Apron using my “Welcome to the Roost” fabric

My online artist who I’ve met a few times live Denise Clason wrote a book called Vintage Aprons*.  I was so excited when she contacted me to see if  I had any fabric that would work well for a vintage apron because she wanted to do some samples.  We sent her to Welcome to the Roost fabric (now available in your local independent quilt shop – made by South Sea Imports).

I was so excited to see this version of Annie’s Apron (p. 33 of the book) using my fabric – totally cool!

She also made a few hot pads from the panel that includes 7 different squares – great for, well, creating hot pads of course, or to use in quilting or home décor projects.

Thanks, Denise, for thinking of me and sharing these great projects.  If you are reading this blog post and love to sew – consider grabbing a copy of Denise’s book* – great for you, great gift for your seamstress friends… the holidays are coming!

A little fun this Friday – the merging of two of my favorite things – the web and musicals

This morning my fiancé (that still sounds funny!) sent my sister and I an email that said, “I thought the theatre sisters would get a kick out of this.”  He knows that we both love musicals and go to at least one each year when we are in New York.  I clicked the link and this made me smile!  How clever to combine West Side Story with all the trendy internet sites to create WebSite Story…

Hope it brings a smile to your face too!  Thanks for the link Craig!

What is your WHY?

You have probably heard this question before – What is your WHY?

A very large part of my WHY started 18 years ago today when I gave birth to my son Kyle. I can’t believe he is now legally an adult. This sweet little baby has grown into an amazing young man and I am incredibly proud that he calls me “mom”.

There are always choices to be made in life – from little ones like what to have for lunch to big one like what to choose as your profession. My son has been a big consideration in how my career has played out – always behind the WHY of my decisions.

Before he was born, I was a sales rep for a college textbook publisher. My territory was the state of Maryland and I was on the road, heading to a different college or university each day. I think about 30% of my time involved overnight travel.

After he was born I had to decide if I wanted to keep doing what I was doing or if I wanted to change paths to be home more. My husband at the time was offered a job transfer and we moved to Oregon. That helped me make the decision – pretty hard to work a Maryland territory from Oregon so we decided I would stay home with our son.

Being around for my son became the WHY behind the next 18 years of decision making.

I tried some home based businesses – things that would be flexible and allow me to be home and still make some money and fulfill the need for me to have something that was “mine” outside of laundry and legos. I did cake decorating, tried a few multi-level marketing companies but never found that great fit. It was ok because for 13 years, we moved every 3-4 years for my husband’s job changes. I’m pretty good at buying and selling houses and moving a family!

Then in 2004 there was the “fork in the road” decision that you may have heard about before. I was getting divorced and had to decide between trying to build an art business or getting a traditional job. Both were scary but the WHY’s in favor of going for my own business outweighed the perceived security of having a boss and benefits.

In 2004 my key WHY’s included:

  • I wanted to be at home – even if I was working – with my son after school, during the summer, etc.
  • I also liked the idea of combining my business experience with my creative side – the idea of making a living from art seemed too good to be true.
  • I wanted flexibility in my time – I wanted to work on my schedule and not have to worry about doctor’s appointments, sick days or play days interfering with my job performance.

My son is now entering his senior year of high school and who knows where he will decide to go to college. I guess he will be a much smaller part of my WHY I do what I do in coming years. I feel like a nostalgic, rambling mother but I guess the point I want to make is this – know what your WHY is for the big decisions in life and also, make sure they aren’t all about someone else. If everything I did was for my son, I’d be feeling very afraid of this next stage of life. But because my WHY’s have been equally for me as a person and me as a mom, I think I’m going to be ok. :) (I think… please have tissues ready.)

So what are your WHYs?

Here’s to knowing why you are doing what you do!

Embroidery Machine Owners in Beaverton, Oregon have a fun, new option at The Sewing Room!

The Sewing Room – a local sewing machine and fabric retailer has a standing order to buy any fabric I design.  It’s pretty cool to go into the store and see “Local Artist” tagged on my fabric collections.  In art licensing, I am usually focused past my local marketplace – working with manufacturers all over the US who sell to stores nationwide and some worldwide.  It is always inspiring to get to know stores and consumers locally – who I can actually see and talk to in person – and learn more about what they like about my work, what they are looking for and more.

The Sewing Room is starting an Embroidery Club and I’ll be a special guest in September.  Members will receive an exclusive embroidery design (for free!) of this coffee mug that coordinates with my Sip & Savor Coffee fabric.

So if you live in the Beaverton, Oregon area, come check it out!

Finding yourself is so exhilarating!

By that I mean “stumbling upon my art in a store when I’m not expecting it”.  One of the hard parts of art licensing is that we often don’t know where our products are being sold.  Since I license my designs to manufacturers who are in charge of selling and shipping products to stores, I don’t have a lot of visibility of that side of things.  It makes it hard when people email me and say “I love your stuff, where can I find it?”  Sometimes I have to reply with “I don’t know…”  – that is so heartbreaking!

But today isn’t about being heartbroken – it’s about being exhilarated!  I was wandering through Kohl’s the other day and decided to wander through the Home Accents section.  I was admiring the pretty wall art, turned around and gasped!  (It made the lady working an aisle down stop to see what the problem was.)  I was SO EXCITED to see my art on stretched canvas looking back at me!  This is my art’s first time in Kohl’s and I’m quite excited about it!

The woman working at Kohl’s was excited as well – first that there wasn’t something bad that I was gasping about and secondly, because she’d never met anyone who made something for sale in the store.  She had lots of questions about how it worked and I was happy to explain it.  (If you don’t know about it – you can learn all about licensing your art on my websites at www.ArtLicensingInfo.com and www.ArtLicensingBlog.com)

So… if you are a coffee lover and want to add a little whimsey to your kitchen or office – head over to Kohl’s and see if they have any left!

A technology first for me…

I just deposited my first check while sitting in my studio – and it freaked me out and got me very excited at the same time!  I love technology and my iPhone but for some reason those fun Chase commercials with the couple who just got married, depositing their gift money by phone in their hotel caused me some discomfort.  I was in my local branch today asking some questions and the banker asked if I had tried it.  I admitted my slight fear of the process and then immediately wondered why.

I also realized that I had forgotten one check I wanted to deposit so I had two choices:  get the check, get back in the car, drive back to the bank and make the deposit or try something new.

I decided to face my fear (why it was such a fear is still a mystery!) and put the app on my iPhone.

With a few security verifications and setup procedures – which took all of about 2 minutes – I was ready to go.  Choose the account to put the money in.  Enter the amount.  Take a picture of the front. Take a picture of the back. Done!  Way faster than going back to the bank and requires no gas!  Two minutes later I got an email confirmation that my deposit was received and it would be processed on the next business day.  They’ll send me an email to confirm that the money is in the bank too!

So… kudos to Chase – love the app!
